We provide an array of comprehensive evidence-based services for child and adolescent patients and their families, including the following:
Assessment (Children – Ages 2-7)
Treatment begins with a comprehensive 60-minute interview with the parents followed by a separately scheduled 30-minute observation of the parent interacting with their child. If both parents are involved in treatment, the observation will be 60 minutes long, in order to give each parent 30-minutes to interact with their child. A representative from the Center for Anxiety will contact each new patient within a week of the completed evaluation (including the observation) to provide the patient with an individualized treatment plan and the opportunity to schedule their next appointment.
Assessment (Pre-Adolescents and Adolescents – Ages 8-17)
Treatment begins with a comprehensive 90-minute evaluation during which the clinician meets with the parents and their child separately, followed by a short debriefing with both the parents and their child to discuss a treatment plan. A representative from the Center for Anxiety will contact each new patient within a week of the completed evaluation to provide the patient with a treatment plan and the opportunity to schedule their next appointment.
Standard treatment is personalized within a structured, research-based framework and involves weekly or bi-weekly 55-60-minute sessions that may be conducted in-person, by telephone, or through a HIPAA compliant teleconferencing software. Please note that we do not practice the industry standard of shortening an “hour” of treatment to 45-minutes, and will provide each patient with 55-60 minute sessions each week. Length of treatment can vary but typically spans a period of 5-20 sessions, with follow-up (“booster”) sessions as necessary.
We offer a unique Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) in the New York area providing quick results and focused, personalized treatment for teenaged patients (ages 12+). Located in our private offices in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Rockland County, this program involves 3-hours of daily individual sessions (no groups) with one or more of our highly skilled therapists. Typical length of stay is 5-10 days, but there is no minimum or maximum. Our IOP is ideal for patients with complex or severe anxiety (e.g., GAD, panic disorder, social anxiety), OCD, depression, and/or personality disorders, and also for out-of-town patients who come to us from across the United States, Canada, and around the world.
Primarily used in the treatment of specific phobias, single session (3-6 hours) intensive treatments can be a valuable means of providing long lasting therapeutic effects in a timely and cost effective manner. Click here for a video about this form of treatment.
Parent training focuses on educating and coaching parents to prevent and react effectively to children’s problem behaviors. Parent training works by improving the quality of parent-child relationships, and effectively using reward systems and discipline. Parent training may be used by itself or in conjunction with other treatments, such as individual therapy for your child. Parent training can involve one or more meetings, depending on the individual needs of the family, and can be conducted in-person or via telephone/web conferencing. Scheduling is flexible to accommodate family needs.
Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)
PCIT is a structured and family-oriented Cognitive Behavioral Therapy designed to help young children (ages 2-7) with emotional and behavioral disorders (like defiance or aggression). The focus of PCIT is on improving the parent-child relationship, and changing maladaptive patterns of parent-child interaction. Parents are coached live during actual interactions with their child that take place in an observation room by one of our trained therapists who watches via a one-way mirror and/or live video feed, and provides guidance through a Bluetooth earpiece worn by the parent. The coaching provides parents with immediate feedback on their use of the new parenting skills, which enables them to apply the skills correctly and master them rapidly. At present, PCIT is offered only in our Brooklyn office.
