Treatment for Children and Teens
We provide an array of comprehensive evidence-based services for child and adolescent patients and their families, including the following:
Treatment begins with a comprehensive 80-minute evaluation, consisting of a structured diagnostic interview, time to speak with the parents and child separately, and time to begin the treatment planning process with the parents and child together. A patient care manager from Center for Anxiety will contact each new patient within a week of the completed evaluation to provide the patient with a treatment plan and the opportunity to schedule their first therapy session.
Standard treatment is personalized within a structured, research-based framework and involves weekly or bi-weekly 50-80 minute sessions that may be conducted in-person, by telephone, or through a HIPAA compliant teleconferencing software. Length of treatment can vary but typically spans a period of 5-20 sessions, with follow-up (“booster”) sessions as necessary.
We are one of the few practices in New York that can provide intensive outpatient services to children and adolescents. We offer a unique Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) in the New York area providing quick results and focused, personalized treatment for child and teenage patients. Our IOP can be conducted in our private offices in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Rockland County, or virtually as needed. Our IOP is ideal for patients with complex or severe anxiety (e.g., GAD, panic disorder, social anxiety), OCD, depression, school refusal, emotion dysregulation, interpersonal difficulties, and also for out-of-town patients who come to us from across the United States, Canada, and around the world. To read more about our IOP, click here (link to IOP page). Please note that children and adolescents are able to participate in the individual IOP track, not the group IOP track.
Primarily used in the treatment of specific phobias, our one-day treatment involves 3-6 hours of intensive exposure therapy conducted over the course of a single day. This approach is surprisingly and remarkably effective, and has lasting therapeutic benefits. Click here for a video about this form of treatment.
Parenting sessions focus on educating and coaching parents to react more effectively to children’s problem behaviors, and to ultimately reduce the frequency of these problem behaviors. Parenting sessions work by helping parents to both improve the quality of parent-child relationships, and to implement consistent reward and discipline systems. These sessions may be used on their own or in conjunction with other treatments, such as individual therapy for your child. Parenting sessions can involve one or more meetings, depending on the individual needs of the family, and can be conducted in-person or via telephone/teleconference. Scheduling is flexible to accommodate family needs.
